Understanding Short Term Accommodation (STA) and How RCS Can Help

For many people living with disability, having the chance to take a break from daily routines – while still receiving the right supports – can make a world of difference. Under the NDIS, this is called Short Term Accommodation (STA). At Real Community Services (RCS), we know that STA is about much more than just “time away.” It’s an opportunity for growth, independence, and connection.

What is STA?

Short Term Accommodation (often called “respite”) is a funded support within the NDIS that gives participants the chance to stay away from their usual home for a short period of time. It includes:

  • Accommodation

  • Personal care and support

  • Meals

  • Activities that help participants work towards their goals

An STA stay can be just a night or up to 14 consecutive days. Many participants use STA regularly throughout the year as part of their plan.

Why STA Matters

STA isn’t just about giving families and carers a rest – though that’s an important benefit. It’s also about:

  • Building independence – trying new routines and skills in a supportive environment.

  • Social connection – meeting new people, enjoying group activities, and making friends.

  • Trying new experiences – whether it’s cooking a meal, exploring the local community, or learning to use public transport.

  • Confidence and resilience – practising life skills in a safe, supported way.

How STA is Funded

Under the NDIS, STA usually comes under Core Supports – Assistance with Daily Living. The funding is flexible and can be used for different short-term accommodation options, depending on the participant’s needs and goals.

How RCS Can Assist

At RCS, we provide STA that’s tailored to each participant. We work with you to create an experience that is both enjoyable and purposeful. Here’s how we help:

  • Personalised Support – Our staff take the time to understand your goals, routines, and preferences, so your stay is meaningful and comfortable.

  • Safe and welcoming environments – Whether it’s in one of our supported homes or in the community, we ensure participants feel secure and at ease.

  • Skill-building opportunities – From daily living tasks to exploring hobbies, our team supports participants to practise and learn in real-life settings.

  • Family peace of mind – Families and carers can take a much-needed break, knowing their loved one is safe and supported.

The Bigger Picture

For many participants, STA is the first step toward greater independence and confidence. It can be a pathway to Supported Independent Living (SIL) or simply a way to recharge, make friends, and try something new. At RCS, we see STA as more than a service – it’s an opportunity for participants to thrive.

With the right support, a short stay can have a big impact. At RCS, we’re here to make sure every STA experience is positive, empowering, and aligned with your goals.
